Plants Revision Flashcards
What is the photosynthesis equation?
Carbon dioxide + water -(light)- oxygen + glucose
6CO2 + 6H2O -(light)- 6O2 + C6H12O6
What is a limiting factor?
If any of the factors for photosynthesis is in short supply, then the rate of photosynthesis will be slowed down
Name 6 uses of glucose
Fruits (other sugars) Is soluble in water Proteins and fats Respiration Turned into cellulose for cell walls Converted into starch (store of energy)
What happens to enzymes when they reach the optimum temperature?
They denature, so the rate of photosynthesis decreases
What is osmosis?
Where molecules diffuse from a place of high concentration to low concentration, through a semi-permeable membrane.
What is oxygen in photosynthesis?
A waste product
Name four uses of plants
Oxygen
Medicine
Clothes
Facial products
When at the best times for plant growth?
Spring/summer
Where does photosynthesis happen?
In the leaves. Chlorophyll in the chloroplasts
Larger surface areas of root hair cells all plants do do more of what?
They can soak up more water and minerals from the soil
What does the Benedict test and iodine test test for?
Benedict- sugar
Iodine- starch
What does inversely proportional mean?
As one increases the other decreases
What does directly proportional mean?
As one increase the other increases
What allows water to pass into the cytoplasm of root hair cells by osmosis?
Cell membranes because they are semi-permeable
Is the concentration of ions grater inside a root hair cell or in the soil?
Root hair cell.
Mineral ions can’t diffuse against this concentration gradient so, proteins in the cell membrane pump the ions
