Plants Flashcards
what does the cell membrane do?
- allows CO2 in
- allows O2 out
what happens in the chloroplast?
photosynthesis takes place
what is the purpose of placing a leaf in boiling water at the beginning?
to kill the leaf
why is a water bath used instead of a Bunsen burner?
because ethanol is flammable
what do chloroplast contain?
chlorophyll which absorbs light
what happens in the chloroplasts?
a place where photosynthesis occurs
what does it mean by a destarched leaf?
if there is no light then starch is broken down into glucose for use in respiration
what is the method for testing a leaf for starch?
- leaf put in boiling water to kill it and stop reactions
- leaf is heated in ethanol to remove all green pigment (chlorophyll)
- use a hot water bath instead of a bunsen burner because ethanol is flammable
- then remove leaf and test for starch with iodine
name two substances that are transported in the xylem?
- water
- minerals
how do the shoots respond in plants?
- the shoots grow towards light (positively photographic)
- shoots grow against gravity (negatively geographic)
how do roots respond in plants?
- the roots grow away from light (negatively photographic)
- the roots grow towards gravity (positively geographic)
what does the hormone auxin promote?
growth in shoots
what does the hormone auxin inhibit?
growth in roots
how do you know the difference between an animal cell and a plant cell?
I know it is a plant cell because it has a cell wall and a vacuole and an animal cell doesn’t contain a cell wall or vacuole
where does the water enter through into a plant?
through the roots
