Homeostasis Flashcards
1
Q
what is homeostasis?
A
maintenance of a constant internal environment
2
Q
why is body temperature regulation (BTR) important?
A
allows proper functioning of enzymes
3
Q
what detects the change in blood temperature (BTR)?
A
thermoregulatory centre in brain
4
Q
what happens if your body temperatures not kept at 37*C?
A
- too cold- hypothermia
- too hot- heat stroke
5
Q
how does your body cool down?
A
- sweating-removes heat by evaporation
- blood vessels widen to allow blood closer to the surface -(vasodilation)
6
Q
how does your body warm up?
A
- stop sweating
- blood vessels narrow to reduce blood flow close to the -surface (vasoconstriction)
- shivering
- hairs stand on ends- traps insulating layers of air
7
Q
what does homeostasis involve?
A
homeostasis involves the nervous system and the hormonal system
8
Q
what levels in the body need to be controlled?
A
- sugar
- water
- temperature
- blood sugar
9
Q
nervous system…
A
- fast, short lived
- electrical impulses
- very precise area
10
Q
hormonal system…
A
- slow, long lasting
- secreted from glands into the blood
