Why do plants need a support system
To provide materials needed for various plant metabolism processes
Metabolism processes
Photosynthesis

Materials transported in plants
Water
Carbon dioxide
Minerals
What does water enter the roots by
Osmosis
Adaptions of water uptake by roots diffusion
How does water move from root hairs to ground tissue
2 mechanisms combine to cause upward movement of water through the stem in the xylem
Root pressure
Transpiration
Root pressure
As Water moves up the root by osmosis it builds up a pressure that pushes water up the water into the xylem
Transpiration
Loss of water from a plant
Transpiration > Upward movement of a plant
As the water evaporates from the leaf by transpiration more water is pulled upwards though the xylem into the leaf
Role of transpiration
Water evaporates from leaf cells
This creates an osmotic gradient
The leaf cells become less turgid
Causing water to move out of the xylem to the leaf cells
Minerals are
Absorbed into roots by diffusion and active transport
Water passes from
Root hairs into root xylem
Xylem
Transports water from the roots to all parts of the plant
