PLANT SYSTEMATICS Flashcards
is a science dealing with a COMPREHENSIVE STUDY of diverse organisms with regard to their NATURAL RELATIONSHIPS. It makes use of characteristics and data from many disciplines in carrying out its primary objectives of describing, naming, classifying, identifying and determining relationships of organisms.
SYSTEMATICS
The word systematics is derived from the Latinized Greek word
SYSTEMA
book by LINNAEUS
SYSTEMA NATURE
SYSTEMA NATURE
LINNAEUS
is a science usually dealing with PRINCIPLES and PROCEDURES OF CLASSIFICATION
TAXONOMY
The word ‘taxonomy’ is derived from the Greek words
TAXIS = arrangement
NOMOS = law
TAXIS means
arrangement
NOMOS means
law
The term ‘taxonomy’ was coined by
A.P. DE CANDOLLE
is the process of PRODUCING A LOGICAL SYSTEM OF CATEGORIS, each containing any number of organisms, which allows EASIER REFERENCE to its components, namely kinds of organism Plants ate assigned to groups within A SYSTEM OF HIERARCHY OR RANKS or categories distinguished by structure, origins, and other characteristics.
CLASSIFICATION
Classification precedes
IDENTIFICATION
is the NAMING OF AN ORGANISM BY REFERENCE TO AN ALREADY EXISTING CLASSIFICATION. It is the act of recognizing or establishing the TAXONOMIC GROUP to which a specimen belongs, applying a name to a specimen.
IDENTIFICATION
is the study of the SYSTEM AND METHODS OF NAMING ORGANISMS, and the construction, interpretation, and application of the regulations governing this system. The use of a binomial for the specific name is basic.
NOMENCLATURE
The use of a binomial for the specific name is
BASIC
The _________ provides RULES to determine what that correct name is.
INTERNATIONAL CODE OF BOTANICAL NOMENCLATURE
is the SET OF RULES AND RECOMMENDATIONS dealing with the formal botanical names that are given to plants. Its intent is that each taxonomic group (“taxon”, plural “taxa”) of plants has only ONE CORRECT NAME that is ACCEPTED WORLDIWDE. The value of a scientific name is that it is an identifier; it is not necessarily of descriptive value, or even accurate.
INTERNATIONAL CODE OF BOTANICAL NOMENCLATURE
Botanical nomenclature is INDEPENDENT OF ZOOLOGICAL AND BACTERIOLOGICAL NOMENCLATURE. The Code applies EQUALLY to names of taxonomic groups treated as plants whether or not these groups were originally so treated.
STRAIGHTFORWARD PRINCIPLE
The application of names of taxonomic groups is determined by MEANS OF NOMENCLATURAL TYPES.
TYPE PRINCIPLE
The nomenclature of a taxonomic group is BASED UPON PRIORITY OF PUBLICATION.
PRIORITY PRINCIPLE
Each taxonomic group with a particular circumscription, position, and rank CAN BEAR ONLY ONE CORRECT NAME, THE EARLIEST THAT IS IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE RULES, except in specified cases.
UNIQUENESS PRINCIPLE
Scientific names of taxonomic groups are treated as LATIN regardless of their derivation.
AS-IT-SHOULD-BE PRINCIPLE
The Rules of nomenclature are RETROACTIVE unless expressly limited.
RETROACTIVITY PRINCIPLE
Swedish Botanist who introduced Binomial Nomenclature
CAROLUS LINNAEUS
first word in nomenclature
GENUS
second word in nomenclature
SPECIES
is the BASIC UNIT of classification
SPECIES
must be formed by combining a generic name with the suffix –aceae, but there are eight exceptions to this rule
