PLANT STRUCTURE AND THEIR FUNCTIONS SEEDS Flashcards
Embryo
Inside the seed is an embryo, which starts the new generation. The
protection afforded to the embryo by the tissues of the seed and
fruit increases the probability of survival of progenies.
Testa
It is the outer coat of
the seed that protects
the embryonic plant.
Micropyle
It is a tiny pore in
the testa that lies on the
opposite of the tip of the
radicle. It permits water to
enter the embryo before
active germination.
Cotyledon
they are the leaves
of the embryo that provide
nourishment to the developing
plant..
Radicle
This is the embryonic
root which will develop into the
primary root of the plant. It is
usually the first part of the
embryo to push its way out of the
seed during germination.
Monocot Seeds
- Monocot seeds have a single
cotyledon - The cotyledon in monocot seeds
are thin and small - The endosperm is present
which stores a large amount of
food for the embryo
Dicot Seeds
- Dicot seeds have two distinct
cotyledons. - The cotyledons in dicot seeds
are fleshy and store food
materials. - The endosperm is reduced or
even absent.
