CELLULAR TRANSPORT PROCESS Flashcards
WATER
The most abundant inorganic compound in plant cell is water. It constitutes 90% of the fresh weight of the protoplasm. Cell metabolism is carried out in a watery environment. It oftentimes involves movement of solutes throughout the cell, between cells, and between the cell and its environment. Substance are absorbed and transported into and throughout the plant using different transport processes.
DIFFUSION
Diffusion is defined as the movement of particles (gas, liquid or solid) as a result of their kinetic energy from a region of higher to a region of a lower concentration.
OSMOSIS
Osmosis, on the other hand refers to the movement of water across a differentially permeable membrane between two solutions and the direction of movement is from higher to lower water potentials.
