PLANT STRUCTURE AND THEIR FUNCTIONS FRUIT Flashcards
Fruit
consists of a ripened ovary
or (ovaries and its contents, seeds and
other parts of the flower), together
with any adjacent part that may be
fused with it.
Fruit wall
is termed pericarp and
is composed of exocarp, mesocarp,
and endocarp.
Production of fruits
is limited
only to flowering plants because fruits
arise only from floral organs.
Parthenocarpic
seedless fruit
Fruit Regions
The skin forms the exocarp,
while the inner boundary
around the seeds form the
endocarp.Mesocarp is often
the fleshy tissue between the
exocarp and endocarp. The
three regions collectively are
called the pericarp.
Kinds of Fruits
▪ Fleshy Fruits
▪ Dry Fruits
▪ Aggregate Fruits
▪ Multiple Fruits
Fleshy Fruits
- Drupe – a simple fleshy fruit
with a single seed enclosed by
a hard, stony endocarp. - Examples: apricots, peaches,
cherries, plums, olives, prune, nectarine
Berries
usually developed
from a compound ovary and
commonly contain more than
one seed.
- Example: tomatoes, grapes,
peppers, eggplants
Pomes
– are simple fleshy
fruits, the bulk of whose flesh
comes from the enlarged
floral tube or receptacle
that grows up around the
ovary.
* Examples: apple, pear
Dry Fruits
Examples: Legume, Siliques, Nuts
AGGREGATE FRUITS
Aggregate Fruits – is one
that is derived from a
single flower with several
to many pistils.
* Examples: raspberries,
blackberries and
strawberries
MULTIPLE FRUITS
Multiple Fruits – are
derived from several to
many individual flowers in a
single inflorescence.
* Examples: mulberries,
oranges, pineapples
