Plant Reproductive Cycles Flashcards
Annual Reproductive cycle
Grow vegitatively and reproduce 1 growing season, then senesce
Billenial Reproductive Cycle
Grow Vegitatively 1 year, then next year reproductive, then senesce
Perennial
Produce vegitative structures that survive many years
-herbacious
-woody
Herbacious Perennials
-grow during favorable seasons and then die back during unfavorable surviving through undergrown structures, dormant
Woody Perennials
-no dying back, become dormant during unfavorable seasons
Sexual Reproduction Advantages
-Genetic Variation through–> evolution
-Rapid Multiplication of Seed
-easy propagation by humans–> less care
Asexual Reproduction Advantages
-Less energy expended
-easier to colonize new area
-organs are less delicate than sexual organs–>surivive harsh environment
Asexual reproduction Structures
-modified stems???
-miniature plants on margin of leaves
-adventitious shoots produced from roots
Disadvantages of vegetative propagation
-no genetic diversity, hard to adapt
-deterioration w age
