Plant Hormones Flashcards
The process of growing old and is associated with decay and mortality or decreased fertility with age
Senescence
It is a naturally occurring phenomenon which involves the separation of fruits, flowers or even leaves from plants at specialized separation layers. In other words, it is the normal shedding of a senescent plant structure or a part.
Abscission
Refers to a seed beginning to grow and sprout.
Germination
This hormone can stimulate stems to lengthen. It can also regulate fruit development and prevent or slow abscission.
Auxin
A plant growth hormone that can be created chemically or produced biologically by the plant. In biological synthesis, the natural hormone is represented by the symbol IAA, standing for indoleacetic acid.
Auxin
This one can control cell division in areas like the roots and shoots. Also important for seed germination or delaying senescence.
Cytokinin
Can stimulate growth for fruit, stem elongation, developing seeds, and germination. Also involved with the development of pollen.
Gibberellin (GA)
This one can stop growth and encourage dormancy of seeds. It can encourage the closing of stomata and It can encourage senescence.
Abscisic Acid (ABA)
The stress hormone in plants. It acts as a plant growth inhibitor and regulates abscission and dormancy.
Abscisic Acid (ABA)
A hormone that encourages ripening of fruit and leaf abscission.
Ethylene
The first-identified plant hormone known to regulate numerous processes in plant growth, development, and response to biotic and abiotic stresses. It is best known for its effect on fruit ripening and organ abscission, and thus has great commercial importance in agriculture.
Ethylene
It increases the plant’s response to tolerance and resistance to various diseases affecting plants as it is found that increasing its internal concentration activates the protective role of pathogenic pathogens
