Crop Seed Physiology Flashcards
Few crops that dominate the agricultural landscape.
Rice, wheat and potatoes
It is the embryonic stage of plant life cycle.
An important part of flowering plant (give rise to a new plant).
Have different shapes and sizes (round, wrinkled, winged or hairy).
They are in dormant condition until they receive adequate sunlight, water and soil.
Seeds
The growth of the plant from a seeds is known as?
Germination
The protective covering that can help seeds remain viable for long periods of time.
Seed Coat
It is the outer thick layer of seed coat that prohibit the entry of sunlight, water and parasites with in the seeds. It also prevent the germination of seeds during unfavorable environmental condition.
Testa
The second inner thin protective layer of seed coat present within the testa. Just like the testa, it also protects the seed and its contents.
Tegmen
The nutritive tissue of the seed, provides nutrients to the seed in the form of starch, carbohydrates and proteins to support the embryo during germination.
Endosperm
It is coconut water, not to be confused with coconut milk, which is harvested from the flesh of fully developed coconuts.
Coconut Endosperm
The most important part of a seed, developed from the fertilized egg. It comprises the following parts:
Epicotyl
Hypocotyl
Radicle
Cotyledons
Embryo
The tiny shoot of an embryo, from which the entire system develops.
Epicotyl
The tip of the epicotyl is called?
Plumule
A plantlet that giving rise to the first true leaves and is grown into shoot plant giving rise to several leaves, branches, flowers, and seeds.
Plumule
The stage of transition for the growing shoot and root of the embryo, the stem of a germinating seedling.
Hypocotyl
The part of a plant embryo that develops into the primary root, tiny roots in the embryo, first root of seed.
Radicle
Are the leaves of the embryo that provide nourishment to the developing plant.
Cotyledons
