A
  • 4 teams of student researchers carried out the study.
  • On each trial, 2 males and 2 females boarded the train at different doors.
  • The female passengers sat at the adjacent area. Observed passengers and recorded data for each trial.
  • The male confederates took roles of victim/model

2) The victim staggers foward and collapses

A
  • The victim stood at the pole (center of critical area)
  • The model stood throughout the trial.
  • At approximately 70 seconds into the jorunery, the victim staggers foward and collapses.
  • The victim remained lying on the floor looking upwards.
  • If the victim recieved no help, the model would help him to his feet at the next stop.

  • The trials were split into 5 conditions
    1. Critical Early: The model stood stood in the critical area. And waited 70 seconds to help the victim.
    2. Critical Late: The model stood in the critical area. And waited 150 seconds to help the victim.
  1. Adjacent Early:The model stood in the adjacent area. And waited 70 seconds to help the victim.
  2. Adjacent Late :The model stood in the adjacent area. And waited 150 seconds to help the victim.

  • Dressed identically in casual clothes (Eisenhower jacket, no tie, old trousers)
  • 38/103 trials= victim smelled of alchol/ carried brown bag with alchol
  • 65 trials= Black cane
