Perry Et Al (methods) Flashcards
What research method was used?
Lab experimernt
Explain very breifly the task ppts had to do in experiment 1?
- The ptts used a CID to assess their interpersonal distance.
- The CID is a interpersonal space test.
- A circle was presented on a computer screen. Ppts were instructed to imagine themselves in the center of the ‘room’ and indicate where the would like the approaching to stop.
computer visualised protagonist=figure
What was the IV for experiment 1?
- Empathy: Operationalised as being high (over 40) or low (under 33)
- Treatment: Operationalised by giving OT or PLACEBO (saline)
- Condition: Operationalised by stranger/ authority/ freind/ ball
1) IMD 2) RMD 3) RMD
What was the DV for both experiments?
Preferred interpersonal distance
But they were operatioanlised in different ways
What task did the ppts have to complete in experiment 2?
- Ppts were asked to choose from several computer-visualised rooms. Where they would prefer to sit and discuss intimate topics with another ppt
- The researchers then measured the distance between the 2 chairs and angle of the chair position
What was the IV for experiment 2?
1) Empathy: Operationalized as being high (over 40) or low (under 33). IMD
2) Treatment: Operationalized by giving oxytocin or placebo (salinesolution) RMD
3) Condition: Operationalised by the position of chairs in the experimental condition
Technically, there was no third IV as ppys were asked to imagine their p
How was the DV operatioanlised in experiment 1?
Preferred interpersonal distance
Operationalised as the distance between the ppts and approaching figure. Measured with CID paradigm
How was the DV operationalised in experiment 2?
Preferred interpersonal distance
Operationalised as mean average preferred distance (cm) and angle (degrees) between 2 chairs
Data collection method
Self report
CID
How much ppts were in the sample?
54 males adults
What was the age of the ppts?
19-32 years
Describe the sample
- Undegraduates from the University of Haifa
- 19-32 years old
- Normal vision/ 5 left handed
- No history of psychiatric/ neurological disorders
- Particpated for course credit/ small payment
High empathisers/ High interpersonal reactivity group
- 20 ppts
- Score greater than/ equal to 40
- Mean age of 25.9
Low empathisers (Low Interpersonal Reactivity group)
- 20 pptts
- Score below 33
- Mean age of 23.9
Describe the experimental design
Mixed measures design
