Pig genetic diseases Flashcards
porcine stress syndrome aka MHS - malignant hyperthermia symdrome
heavy pigs are more likely to carry the gene, It includes acute stress and sudden death, poor meat quality (pale, soft, exudative PSE or dark firm dry meat DFD), halothane anasthesia sensitivity - malignant hyperthermia!
detected by halothane test, autosomal recessive, closure of Na⁺ channels in the mucle, intensive heat production, incr. meatabolism
progressive myopathy
- lameness of piglets, muscular weakness
tremor type 3
myoclonia = twitch, frequent muscle tremmor of piglets
neonatal diarrhoea
piglets aged 0-4 days and can begin within 12 hours of birth. Affected piglets may suck but often stand with drooping tails, appear shrunken and have a dull skin with erect coat hairs. = dehydrated
diagnosis of the PSS
(stress) monogenes can be partly diagnosed using PCR, in developed countries - to detect and eliminate the heterozygote. halothane in homozygote
metabolic diseases
- *blood**: haemophilia A, pseudohaemoohilia (coag. cascade)
- *obesity genes**: genes, leptin, myogenin controlling fat…
bone
vitamin D resistant rickets: low Ca²⁺ absorption resulting in growth disorders
dwarfism: proportional, mutations of the GH receptor
intersex diseases
XX males
(for. ovale persists)
