  1. sound waves channelled through external acoustic meatus -> vibrate tympanic membrane
  2. tympanic membrane transmits vibrations through ossicles (amplification)
  3. footplate of stapes vibrates oval window creating pressure waves in perilymph
  4. hair cells on basement membrane moved, stimulating action potentials
  5. CN VIII -> superior temporal gyrus
