Physics - Light Flashcards
What is density?
The amount of molecules in an area
What is a transverse wave?
A light wave that has waves like the ocean. The particles travel at right angles of the medium.
What is a longitudinal wave?
Waves that are compressed and the particles travel in the direction the wave is moving.
What is frequency?
The number of crests in a second
What is the wavelength?
The distance between each crest
What is velocity?
The speed which the wave travels
Transparent
You can clearly see the objects on the other side, as all light passes through.
Translucent
Blurred image, as some light passes through, while some reflects.
Opaque
Cannot see through, as all light is reflected or absorbed
Refraction
When light passes through an object. The light bends when the object is less or more dense.
Refractive index
A measurement of density. The higher the index, the more dense.
Dispersion
Separation of white light into colours of different wavelengths.
What is the job of the pupil?
Allows light into the eye
What is the job of the iris?
Controls the size of the pupil
What is the job of the lens?
Focuses light onto the retina
