Physical geography Fluvio-glacial Landforms Flashcards
Fluvio-Glacial Landforms definition-(summed up formed)
Landforms produced by the MELTWATER from GLACIERS
Fluvio-Glacial Landforms Sandur /Outwash Plain define
An EXTENSIVE gently sloping area of SAND AND GRAVELS that form in FRONT of a GLACIER.
IT results from the OUTWASH of Sediment carried by MELTWATER, Streams and Rivers.
Fluvio-Glacial Landforms Sandur /Outwash Plain FORMATION
During a ABLATION Period, meltwater CARRIES SEDIMENT away from SNOUT as GLACIER RETREATS
STREAM DEPOSITS sediment when STREAM LOSES ENERGY
SEDIMENT is SPREAD OUT OVER the OUTWASH PLAIN
deposition of the outwash will be very SEASONAL only during warmer summer months.
Fluvio-Glacial Landforms Kames/Definition
Mounds of sediment which are deposited in the PATH of the FRONT of a SLOWLY/STATIONARY GLACIER/ ICE SHEET.
THE SEDIMENT contains SAND AND GRAVELS
Fluvio-Glacial Landforms /Kames Formation
ROCKFALL from the valley - FALLS on to the CREVASSES of a GLACIER
During the ABLATION PERIODS SEDIMENT moves further DOWN to the BASE of the GLACIER
when the glaicer has ALMOST MELTED they reach VALLEY BED and depoisted as a MOUND OF SEDIMENT
Fluvio-Glacial Landforms/Kames Terraces Define
Also Composed of SAND and Gravel but they FORM ALONG the SIDES of the GLACIER rather than at its SNOUT
Fluvio-Glacial Landforms/Kames Terraces FORMATION
PRESURRE between VALLEY SIDES and GLACIER- Promotes Melting due to FRICTION releasing THERMAL ENERGY
This forms SUPRA GLACIAL STREAMS which collect SEDIMENT along the valley
as GLACIER retreats in ABLATION PERIODS MATERIAL is deposited on the VALLEY FLOOR
Importance of Glacial Meltwater
Meltwater helps to lubricate the base of a glacier and overcome friction allowing the glacier to SLIP FORWARD periodically
Meltwater helps TRANSPORT moraine beneath the Ice where it provides tools for GLACIAL EROSION
If it REFREEZES meltwater can bind the base of the glacier to Broken Rock fragments-plucking
Meltwater will also ERODE channels and form DISTINCTIVE DEPOSITIONAL features-both in front and beneath the ice.
Fluvio-Glacial Landforms-Esker definition
An esker is a long SINUOUS RIDGE composed of UNSTRATIFIED SAND AND GRAVEL
laid down by GLACIAL MELTWATER
Fluvio-Glacial Landforms-Esker Formation
SUB-GLACIAL STREAMS FORM due to INCREASED PRESSURE -from BASE of Glacier
during ABLATION PERIODS when GLACIER RETREATS
SUB GLACIAL STREAMS STOP FLOWING due to REDUCED pressure from GLACIER
SEDIMENT is DEPOSITED in SUB-GLACIAL TUNNELS
