Physical Geography Depositional Landforms Flashcards

Q

Moraine definition

A

An accumulation of unconsolidated (unsorted) material DEPOSITED by GLACIERS. These accumulations are usually unsorted as there are many different sized particles deposited in moraines. The SEDIMENT in Moraines can have ANGULAR EDGES

A

Accumulation of unconsolidated material deposited at the SNOUT OF THE GLACIER.

Q

Lateral moraine

A

Unconsolidated material deposited along THE SIDE of an ALPINE GLACIER. When the glacier melts, EMBANKMENTS OF MATERIAL are left ALONG the VALLEY SIDES

Q

Medial moraine

A

Found in the centre of glacier
Formed through the merging of two LATERAL MORAINES where two glaciers joint formation

Q

Push moraine

A

Found only in glaciers that have RETREATED and then ABRADED Again - BRUSH PAN ANALOG
Material has already been DEPOSITED and is SHOVED up into A PILE as the GLACIER ADVANCES
KEY- INDIVIDUAL ROCKS that have been pushed UPWARDS from their ORIGINAL HORIZONTAL POSITION

Q

Hummocky Moraine

A

Formed during a SERIES of SMALL but REPEATED READVANCES OF GLACIERS pushing MATERIAL into IRREGULAR MOUNDS closely HEAPED TOGETHER

Q

Drumlin definition

A

Elongated features that can a 1km or more in length one end is quite steep whilst the other side tapers away it ground level
Their shame is similar to a ramp.

Q

Till sheet formation

A

Formed when a large mass of UNSTRATIFIED DRIFT is deposited at the end of a PERIOD OF ICE SHEET advance which SMOOTHS the UNDERLYING SURFACE
