Physical/functional limitations Flashcards
Training characteristics of children and youth
should get 60 min mod-vigorous exercise daily; children have lower peak oxygen uptake levels; sweat less; lower tolerance for temp extremes; High intensity or volume aerobic or anaerobic training should be discouraged.
Training characteristics of older adults
elevated resting and exercise Bp, reduced max heart rates and CO; recc. resistance tng 3-5d/wk using lighter weights and slower progressions
Energy expenditure goals for obese clients
200-300kcal/session with minimum weekly standard of 1250kcal, gradually increasing to 2000/wk
Cautions for obese clients
avoid prone or supine positions because of blood pressure responses; machines may not be designed for obese clients; weight supported exercise may decrease ortho stress, but walking is preferred; assure client feels socially and emotionally safe
potential contraindication for diabetics
self myofascial release if they have neuropathy
Contraindications for hypertensives
Supine or prone positions, especially if the head is lower than the heart; Valvalva maneuver; perform resistance training seated or standing
Training guidance for CAD
get meds and approval from MD; low-intensity aerobic activity; weekly calorie goal of 1.5-2k cal; do not do resistance work until client has been exercising with problems for at least 3 mo; perform exercises seated or standing; SMR only if approved by MD; no plyometrics initially
Osteoporosis contraindications
SMR; plyometric tng not recommended
How much exercise before bone mass is impacted in osteopenics
6 months consistent high intensity exercise
Cautions for pregnancy
Exercise OK until 3rd trimester; avoid foam roll on varicose veins or swelling; plyometrics is not advised
Cautions for PVD
SMR is not recommended
