Physical and Chemical Changes/Properties Flashcards
What is a Physical Change?
A change in a physical property of a substance, not altering chemical composition (like texture, shape, state of matter)
Examples include:
- Cutting
- Bending
- Mixing/Dissolving
- Freezing
- Melting
remember: physical changes can easily be reverted
What are Physical Properties?
Properties that can be observed that do not alter the substance’s original chemical composition
Examples include:
- Density
- Color
- Melting/Boiling point
- Soluability
- Conductiveness
- Texture
- Odor
What is a Chemical Change?
A change in a chemical property of a substance, altering chemical composition (like flammability, pH level, and reactivity)
Examples include:
* Burning
* Baking
* Formation of gases
* Color change
remember: chemical changes cannot be reverted, or just not easy to
What are Chemical Properties?
Properties that can be observed through an alter of the substance’s original chemical composition
Examples include:
- Flammability
- Reactability
- pH level
- Corrosiveness
- Stability
- Oxidation
- Heat of Combustion
Is burning a candle a physical or chemical change?
Chemical change - wax molecules change into different substances
Is water evaporating a physical or chemical change?
Physical change - liquid changes into gas, but molecules remain the same
Is iron oxidizing a physical or chemical change?
Chemical change - iron interacts with oxygen to form iron oxide
Is dissolving sugar within water a physical or chemical change?
Physical change - particles spread out and form a solution, but do not combine nor change
Is photosynthesis a physical or chemical process?
Chemical process - chloroplasts convert carbon and water into oxygen and glucose
Is erosion a physical or chemical process?
Physical process - solid materials/molecules wear down, but do not change
