Lab Equipment Flashcards
What is a Graduated Cylinder? How does it look?
- Clear cylinder used to measure volume of liquid
- Clear, tall, straight, cylindrical shape
What is an Erlenmeyer Flask? How does it look?
- Flat-bottomed flask used to contain, mix, heat, or cool liquids
- Clear, flat-bottomed, narrow headed, triangular shape
What is a Mortar & Pestle? How does it look?
- Bowl and grinder used to crush up solids into smaller pieces or fine powder
- Bowl and handheld grinder (like a small baseball bat)
What is a Test Tube and Rack? How does it look?
- Tubes placed within a rack used to hold multiple container tubes at once
- Small, narrow test tubes and double-layered rack with multiple holes
What is an Evaporating Dish? How does it look?
- Small, shallow bowl heated over a flame to evaporate liquids
- Small, shallow shape with lip for pouring
What is a Crucible? How does it look?
- Small, ceramic container with lid, heated to very high temperatures for melting solids
- Looks like a tiny pot with a candle wick over it
What is a Bunsen Burner? How does it look?
- Tall, cylindrical flame device for heating chemicals and substances within flasks
- Tall, cylindrical shape with flat base, connected by a gas inlet tube
What is a Beaker? How does it look?
- Wide, cylindrical glass used for holding liquids
- Wide, lipped, cylindrical glass with flat base
What is a Clay Triangle? How does it look?
- Wire and ceramic triangle used for holding/supporting a Crucible over a Bunsen Burner
- 3 pieces of ceramic in a triangle shape held with wire
What are Crucible Tongs? How do they look?
- Scissor-like tools (concave tongs) with curving at the front for holding hot Crucibles or other heated containers/flasks
- Scissor shape with blades replaced by pincers that concave together
not to be confused with test tube clamps, they look similar!
What are Test Tube Clamps? How do they look?
- Tongs with finger grips used for holding heated test tubes
- Tong-like appearance with a circle at the back, two in the middle, and rectangular test-tube holders at the front
not to be confused with crucible tongs clamps, they look similar!
What is a Watch Glass? How does it look?
- Circular piece of concave glass used as an evaporation surface or as a beaker cover
- Clear, circular shape, like the lens of a pair of glasses
What is a Wire Gauze? How does it look?
- Netting made of woven wire used as a tripod for glasses and beakers, or placed above a burner
- Square netting with circle design in the middle, made entirely of wire
What is a Funnel? How does it look?
- Plastic tube used for pouring large quantities into narrow containers
- Plastic, funnel shape (narrow at the bottom, wide at the top)
What is a Scoopula? How does it look?
- Spatula-like spoon used to transfer solids
- Long, metal, scoop-shaped object (can be held like a pencil)
