Phylum Nematoda Flashcards
How are nematodes morphologically similar?
they have no segmentation, no appendages, no eyes and they are slightly blunt on one end and slightly pointy on the other
What is the body cavity of nematoda?
its a pseudoceolomate so its not completely lined by mesoderm
How do nematodes reproduce?
some are hermaphrodites, and others go through internal fertilization which means theres a male sex and female sex and they produce eggs in the uterus
What kind of development are nematodes?
- Direct development therefore, no larval stage
What does Eutelic mean?
it means that post-embryonic growth occurs by each cell growing not by addition of cells, if you knock out one cell from embryo, then it causes consequences in adult missing that cell
How do nematodes move?
they move side to side by contractions of their longitudinal body wall muscles
What is the habitat of nematodes?
most free live in organic substances like soil, fresh water and marine
- there are some that are predators and microbivores and some that are decomposers
What two types of worms are medically important?
filarial worms and guinea worm
What is ascaris lumbricoides (common roundworm)
its a parasite that you get from unclean water and the worms grow in your intestines
What is guinea worm?
you can also get this by drinking unfiltered water and the larvae are realized in the intestinal wall until the fertilized worm migrates to the surface of the skin and causes a blister and discharges its larvae
- the larvae come out of the skin in stringy worm
What is heart worm?
causes nematodes to grow in the heart of an animal usually dog after encounter with infected mosquito
