phylum nematoda Flashcards
cuticle
outermost layer, stiff, resistant to outside conditions, made of collagen, noncelullar, secreted by the layer underneath, shed and replaced throughout life (called ecdysis)
ecdysis
the shedding of an exterior cuticle or exoskeleton
hypodermis
the layer underneath the cuticle, syncytial, produces the cuticle through secretions
nematode nervous system
consists of dorsal and ventral nerve cords and two types of sensory structures that are openings in the cuticle that allow them to smell/sense the env called amphids and phasmids
amphids & phasmids
openings in the cuticle that allow nematodes to sense their environment, amphid is at anterior, phasmid at posterior
nematode excretory system
lack metanephridia
lateral cords have excretory canals with dermal pores
is nematode digestive system complete?
yes, mouth + anus
nematode pharynx
lines with cuticle, often has specialized hooks /cutting plates / teeth
most nematodes are _____ feeders
fluid: eat sap, blood
those who aren’t eat bacteria
nematode development
direct development since there is not larvae, but they have 4 juvenile stages which molt to go to next one.
what is interesting about nematode cells?
they have consistent number throughout whole life, all adult members of a species have the same number cells which can be mapped
