phylum hemichordata Flashcards
hemichordates are commonly called:
acorn worms, pterobranchs, enterpneusts
hemichordates are sister group to:
echinoderms
hemichordates have 2 characteristic traits of chordates:
pharyngeal slits and a nerve cord
hemichordates move:
through peristaltic contractions of proboscis, inchworm style
hemichordates respire:
using cilia to draw water into mouth and push out water thru pharyngeal slits
2 feeding guilds of hemichordates:
suspension feeders: mucus on provoscis gets particles stuck and cilia move the particles to the mouth. are able to sort particles
non-selective deposit feeders: eat sediment, digest organics, poop out clean sediments
pterobranchia are:
a type of hemichordate. have arms with tentacles
tornaria
ciliated larva of hemichordates, resemble the asteroidea ciliated larva
hemichordate bodies, generally speaking, are:
worm-like
