What is the parasites within the Mesostigmata and where is the stigmata located?
Mites
Stigmata is lovated over the coxae of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th pair of legs
Contain anal plate, palps, chelicera, hypostoma, gnathosoma and idiosoma like ticks.
What are the main features of Dermanyssus gallinae?
Hosts is birds and mammals
Can infect humans –> causes painful bites
On the dorsal surface, contain dorsal shield / pate (like scutum) posteriorly. The ventral surface contains anal plate (triangular), anus located in the posterior half. Contain sternal shield.
What is the lifecycle of Dermanyssus gallinae?
Spends most of its time within the cracks and crevices of the poultry house.
Mating takes place in the environment. After females feed, they lay 4-7 eggs within the poultry house.
Eggs –> larvae –> 2 nymphal stages –> adults within 1 week. Large populations can develop quickly.
They are nocturnal blood feeders, females feed repeatedly, nymphs once before molting and males occasionally.
Females can live up to 9 months if they do not feed.
Bites are painful
What are the main features of the Ornithonyssus species?
Similar to Dermanygussus gallinae.
Grey/white before feeding, dark red after feeding.
More spiny than D. gallinae.
Contains dorsal shield on the dorsal surface. (like scutum)
Contains anal plate which is oval, anus is located in the anterior half of the anal plate
What are the two species of Ornithonyssus?
Ornithonyssus sylviarun –> eggs are laid on the body of the host, spends its entire life on the host eggs can be laid on the host of in the environent. Most of its time are located in the environment, only on host to feed.
