Photosynthesis & Leaf Structure Flashcards
How are leaves adapted for photosynthesis?
- Large surface area for light to fall on
- Thin so diffusion distances for gases are shorter
- Contain chlorophyll to absorb light
- Veins to bring water and remove products of photosynthesis
- Air spaces to allow CO2 to get to cells and oxygen to leave by diffusion
- Guard cells open and close stomata to regulate gas exchange.
What are the limiting factors of photosynthesis?
Light, temperature, CO2 conc. and amount of chlorophyll
What do plants convert spare glucose into?
Why?
Starch.
Because it’s insoluble.
Uses of glucose for a plant?
- Cellular respiration
- Produce cellulose to strengthen cell walls
- Produce amino acids for protein synthesis
- Starch for storage
Symbol equation for photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6H2O → C6H12O6 + 6O2
What kind of reaction is photosynthesis?
Endothermic
How does the leaf get water?
From roots which is then transported through the xylem
Where does the leaf get C02 from?
Diffuses directly from the environment to the stomata
What does Meristem Tissue do?
Found in roots and shoots and differentiates into cell types so the plane can grow.
Explain what happens when the guard cells are hyrdrated
The gap between 2 cells enlarges allowing for more C02.
Explain what happens when the guard cells are anhydrous
Guard cells lose water and become flaccid. This closes the stomata to conserve water vapour.
Why do the guard cells close at night?
Because they’re light sensitive and photosynthesis isn’t taking place
