How do you create your sample for a food test?
A
- Crush using mortel & pestle
- Put in beaker with distilled water
- Filter out using funnel and filter paper

What is the Benedict’s Test?
A
- Test for sugars
- transfer 5cm3 of sample into a water bath at 75°c for 5 mins.
- if there are no reducing sugars, it stays blue.
- it turns brick red if sugars are present

What is the iodine test?
A
- test for carbohydrates
- mix 5cm3 of sample with iodine solution.
- Creates a brown/orange colour which will turn black/blue if it contains starch

What is the biuret test?
A
- tests for proteins
- mix 2cm3 of sample with 2cm3 biuret solution
- if contains proteins it goes from blue to pink/purple

A
- tests for lipids
- mix sample with 2cm3 of ethanol and 2cm3 of distilled water
- it turns cloudy white if lipid is present
