Enzymes & Digestive System Flashcards
What is an enzyme?
A biological catalyst that is made of amino acids
What are the roles of enzymes in digestion?
Carbohydrates -> broken down to starch by amylase
Proteins -> broken down into protease by amino acids
Fats -> broken down by lipase
Where is amylase produced?
Salivary glands, pancreas and small intestine
Where is protease produced?
Stomach, pancreas, small intestine
Where is lipase produced?
Pancreas and small intestine
What are the 2 models of enzymes?
- Lock and key -> substrate must fit
- Induced fit -> changes shape
What does amylase break down?
Starch into glucose
What does protease break down?
Protein into amino acids
What does lipase break down?
Lipids into fatty acids or glycerol
What is the function of bile?
Emulsifies lipids
What is the function of HCl in the stomach?
Kills pathogens, gives optimal pH for enzymes
What are the two jobs enzymes carry out in the digestive system?
Catabolic (breaks down) and anabolic (puts together)
reactions
What does specificity mean?
Enzymes that can only catalyse one type of reaction
Which part of the digestive system absorbs water?
Large intestine
What does the small intestine digest?
Lipids, starch and protein
