Microscopes And Cells Flashcards
Definition of object?
Real sample that you’re looking at
Definition of image?
What we see when looking down the microscope
What is magnification?
How many times larger the image is than the object
What is the equation for magnification?
Image size / object size
How do light microscopes work?
Light hits the mirror, reflects upwards, through the object, passes through the objective lens and eyepiece lens
What is resolution?
The shortest distance between 2 points on an object that can still be distinguished as 2 separate entities.
Advantages and disadvantages of light microscopes?
Easy to use, cheap but the resolution is limited
Advantages and disadvantages of electron microscopes?
Higher resolution but expensive and hard to use.
What are cells?
Smallest unit of life that can replicate independently
What are prokaryotic cells and an example?
Cells without a nucleus that have genetic material in a DNA store. E.g Bacteria
What are eukaryotic cells and an example?
Cells with a nucleus. E.g Animal cell, plant cell
What does the cell membrane do?
Control which substances pass in and out of the cell
Function of nucleus?
Contains genetic material
Function of cytoplasm ?
Site of chemical reactions
Functions of mitochondria?
Provide cells with the energy they need to function. Also site of aerobic respiration.
