Photosynthesis - C5 Flashcards
What is the overall reaction in photosynthesis?
Co2 + water (in presence of sunlight an chlorophyll) produces glucose and oxygen
Where does the Light - Dependent Reaction take place?
In the grana (stacks of thylakoid membranes)
What is split in the light - dependent reaction?
H2O = H2 O2
Does H2 or O2 get used in the light independent reaction?
H2, O2 is used for either cellular respiration or diffused out of the leaf via stomata
What is the Electron Transport Chain used for transporting?
Used for transporting H+ onto NADP to make NADPH
What does NADPH go on to make?
Produces ATP to go on and make ATP synthase (an enzyme)
What colours do Chlorophyll, Carotenes and Xanthophylls make?
Green, Orange and Red
Why do leaves go red and orange in autumn?
Because Chlorophyll is lost and more persistent carotenoids give reds, yellow and orange
Where does the light independent reaction take place?
In the stroma
What does ATP change into to give off energy?
ADP
What is energy used for in light independent reaction?
To combine H2 from light dependent reaction with Co2 to make glucose
What are 3 uses of glucose?
Cellular respiration, energy storage and building materials
Name factors affecting rate of photosynthesis
Temperature, Co2 concentration, Light intensity, Light quality (colour/wavelength)
What happens if photosynthesis is too hot or cold?
Hot: enzymes denature
Cold: collisions happen too slowly
What effect does Co2 concentration have on photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis rate cannot increase if substrate concentration is limited
What is the compensation point?
The light level when rate of photosynthesis = rate of respiration (no net exchange of O2 or CO2)
What is the main factor affecting photosynthesis?
Light quality (need enough blue/violet wavelengths to have light dependent reaction working properly)
List 3 limiting factors for photosynthesis
Light, Co2 concentration, temperature
How do we measure photosynthesis?
Consumption of reactant (Co2) and production of product (O2)
