Biomolecules - C5 Flashcards
What three chemicals do organic compounds contain?
Carbon, Oxygen, Hydrogen
What are the four major categories of organic compounds?
Carbohydrates, Proteins, Lipids and Nucleic Acid
Give examples of Polysaccharides
Glycogen, Cellulose
Three uses of lipids
Steroids, Waxes on leaf cuticles, and Phospholipid membranes
What is the structure of lipids (fatty acids and glycerol?
Made of molecules called triglycerides formed when 3 fatty acids attach to glycerol
At storage form, what do Triglycerides contain?
Three fatty acid compounds
What are some uses of proteins?
Protein channels, keratin, defensive systems
Structure of proteins (aa)
Made of amino acids, can also be Sulphur, phosphorus, iron or copper
What are peptide bonds between?
Amino acids
How many naturally occurring amino acids are there?
20
How many amino acids do humans make?
11
Describe the process of creating protein structure
- Amino acid chain
- Chain linked in either pleats or helixes ( (slightly positive amino acids attracting to slightly negative)
- Becomes 3D via attraction between pleats and helixes
- Proteins such as hemoglobin have multiple strands of amino acids (4) not all proteins have these
What is the proteome?
The complete array of proteins produced by a single cell organism in a particular environment
What are nucleic acids?
Similar to nucleic acids, very large molecule
What are nucleic acids made of?
Nucleotides
