Photosynthesis And Tropisms Flashcards
Photosynthesis
The way in which plants make their own food
Carbon dioxide and water come together to form food such as glucose. The energy needed for this comes from the sun
FNFP : carbon dioxide
Comes from the air. Enters the plant through stomata
FNFP : water
Comes from the soil. Travels up the stem from the roots to the leaves in the xylem
FNFP : chlorophyll
Green pigment found in the leaves. Traps light energy and converts it to chemical energy
FNFP : light
Comes from the sun. Absorbed by the chlorophyll in the leaves and is the energy need to make food
POPATU : glucose
Can be used in respiration to make energy for the plant.
Can be stored as starch in the leaves or transported to the stem, roots and leaves.
Can be converted into protein.
POPATU : oxygen
Can be used in respiration to produce energy in the plant.
Can be released from the plant and used by other organisms in respiration.
Process of photosynthesis word equation
light + chlorophyll
Carbon dioxide + oxygen —————— glucose + oxygen
Importance of photosynthesis
Produces food for plants which provides food for humans and other animals
Produces oxygen which then is breathed by humans and other organisms
Removes Carbon dioxide from the air and reduces the greenhouse effect
Tropisms
The growth of a plant in response to a stimulus
Phototropism
Growth response of a plant to light
Shoots of plants grow towards the light
Phototropism allows the plant to get as much light as possible.
As a result the plant makes more food
Geotropism
Growth response of a plant to the force of gravity.
The roots of the plants grow towards the force of gravity and the shoots grow away from it.
Geotropism makes sure the plant finds water and minerals in the soil and that the plant is well anchored
