Photosynthesis and limiting factors Flashcards
What is photosynthesis?
A process whereby green plants use energy from sunlight in the presence of carbon dioxide water and chlorophyll to make glucose.(i.e. green plants make their own food)
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon Dioxide + Water —————————————-> glucose + oxygen
SUNLIGHT and chlorophyll
What is the balanced symbol equation for photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6H20 —————————————-> C6H12O6 + 6O2
SUNLIGHT and chlorophyll
Where is chlorophyll found in plant?
In the leaf specifically the chloroplasts
Use of xylem?
The xylem. transports water and minerals from the roots up the plant stem and into the leaves.
Use of phloem?
The phloem. moves food substances that the plant has produced by photosynthesis
How is water absorbed by the roots?
OSMOSIS
What are the uses of glucose?
1) Respiration for energy
2) Fruit sugars
3) Plant fat/oil
4) Starch and stored in root/stem
5) Cellulose(cell walls)
6) Protein for growth and repair(+ mineral ions from soils)
Word equation for respiration?
GLUCOSE + OXYGEN ———–> CARBON DIOXIDE + WATER ( + ENERGY)
Symbol equation for respiration?
C6H12O6 + 6O2 ————-> 6CO2 + 6H20 ( + ENERGY)
What factors are needed for photosynthesis to take place in plants?
1) Daylight
2) Green plants
What do plants do at night?
Respire to release energy (Respiration)
Is photosynthesis an exothermic or endothermic reaction?
endothermic reaction
Do animals respire or photosynthesise and in what conditions?
Animals only respire and they can do this in daylight and night.
What is a limiting factor of photosynthesis?
Limiting factors are those that limit the rate of photosynthesis and stop photosynthesis occurring any faster.
