Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is photosynthesis?
The process where plants and algae produce glucose
Where, in a plant, does photosynthesis occur?
The leaves
Where, in the leaf, does photosynthesis occur?
Inside chloroplasts
What is chlorophyll?
Green substance inside chloroplasts
How does chlorophyll photosynthesise?
Absorbs sunlight and uses its energy to convert carbon dioxide and water, into glucose (and oxygen as a by-product)
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon Dioxide + Water —> Glucose + Oxygen
What are the limiting factors of photosynthesis?
Intensity of light
Temperature
Volume/Concentration of CO2
What is a limiting factor (regarding photosynthesis)?
Something stopping photosynthesis happening faster
What is the limiting factor at night?
Light
What is the limiting factor in winter?
Temperature
What is the limiting factor if it’s warm and bright enough?
CO2
Why does the rate of photosynthesis decrease around 45*?
Enzymes are destroyed
How do farmers artificially create ideal environment for photosynthesis?
Greenhouses
When might a farmer use a heater?
Winter
When might a farmer use shades or ventilation?
Summer
When do farmers use artificial light?
At night
How would a farmer increase CO2 in a greenhouse?
Paraffin heater (releases CO2 as a by-product)
Why do farmers add fertiliser to soil?
Provide plant with all the minerals needed for healthy growth
What are the 5 ways plants use glucose?
Respiration, Making cell wall, Proteins, Stored in seeds, Stored as starch
Why do plants respire?
Release energy and enable em to convert rest of glucose into useful substances so they can build/grow cells
How does glucose make cell walls?
Glucose is converted into cellulose for making strong cell walls
How does glucose make proteins?
Combined with nitrate ions (from soil) to make amino acids, which are made into proteins
How is glucose stored in seeds?
Glucose is turned into lipids (fats and oils)
How does the plant use starch?
For use when photosynthesis isn’t happening (winter)
