Organs Flashcards
What is differentiation?
The process by which cells become specialised for a particular function
When does differentiation occur?
During development of multicellular organisms
What order?
Tissues, Organ Systems, Cells, Organs
Cells, Tissues, Organs, Organ System
Why do large multicellular organisms have different systems?
Exchange and transport materials
What is a tissue?
Group of similar cells that work together to carry out a particular function
What are 3 tissue types?
Muscular
Glandular
Epithelial
What do muscular tissues do?
Contracts - for movement
What do glandular tissues do?
Make and secrete chemicals (enzymes and hormones)
What do epithelial tissues do?
Cover some parts of body (they’re inside the gut)
What is an organ?
Group of different tissues, that work together to perform a certain function (such as a stomach)
What role does muscular tissue have in the stomach?
Moves stomach wall to churn up the food
What role does glandular tissue have in the stomach?
Makes digestive juices to digest food
What role does epithelial tissue have in the stomach?
Covers outside and inside of the stomach
What is an organ system?
A group of organs working together to perform a particular function (such as the digestive system)
How does the digestive system exchange materials with the environment?
Taking in nutrients and releasing substances (like bile)
