Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is photosynthesis?
The process by which green plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to make their own food.
Where does photosynthesis take place?
It takes place in the chloroplasts that contain chlorophyll.
What is the first stage of photosynthesis?
The light dependent reaction that requires light and chlorophyll and light energy splits water into hydrogen and oxygen
What is the second stage of photosynthesis?
The oxygen produced is used up in respiration or released through the stoma.
What is the photosynthesis process?
Raw materials -> Carbon Dioxide + Water (with light and chlorophyll conditions needed) —> glucose + oxygen which are products.
Raw materials: carbon dioxide + water
Conditions needed: light and chlorophyll
Products: glucose + oxygen
What is the stoma?
Pores found on the surface of the leaves, stems and other plants organs surrounded by two guard cells.
What are guard cells?
Specialized cells that open and close the stomata. They regulate gas exchange and water loss in plants.
Why is the stoma important?
It lets in carbon dioxide enter the leaves for photosynthesis
What is the lamina important?
It’s broad in order to trap as much sunlight as possible
Why are the veins in a plant important?
They transport water and food
What happens in the light independent stage?
The Carbon dioxide combines with the oxygen to make the glucose
What happens to the glucose once it has been made
It can be stored as proteins, starch and vitamins or gets used in respiration.
