Classification Flashcards
What is classification?
The process of grouping organisms based on similar characteristics
What are the seven taxonomic levels?
Kingdom
Phylum
Class
Order
Family
Genus
Species
How do you remember the seven taxonomic levels?
Kids pick candy over fresh green salad
What are the five kingdoms?
Animalia, Plantae, Prokaryotae, Protoctista and Fungi
Or animals, plants, prokaryotes, protoctista and fungi
What are 3 characteristics of the kingdom animalia
Multicellular, no chlorophyll and they ingest food
What are 3 characteristics of the kingdom plantae
Multicellular, contain chlorophyll and make food by photosynthesis
What are 2 characteristics of the kingdom prokaryotae
No nucleus and no membrane bound organelles
What are 3 characteristics of kingdom protoctista
Mostly unicellular, may contain chlorophyll and have a true nucleus
What are 3 characteristics of kingdom fungi
Multicellular, no chlorophyll and made up of microscopic threads called hyphae
What is the phylum porifera and 3 characteristics?
Sponges. They are stationary organisms, lack tissues and organs and body contains a single cavity with many pores in its walls making a system of water canals
What are 3 characteristics of the phylum Cnidaria
Have a bag or umbrella shaped body, gut has only one opening, the mouth and has a ring of tentacles around the mouth
What is and what are characteristics of phylum platyhelminthes
Flatworms. They have a long, flat, unsegmented body
What is and what are characteristics of the phylum nematodes?
Roundworms. Have an elongated, round, unsegmented body with pointed ends.
What is and what are characteristics of phylum annelids?
Segmented worms. Have an elongated body divided into segments
What are 3 characteristics of phylum arthropods
Have a waterproof exoskeleton, have a segmented body, have several pairs of jointed legs,
What are 3 characteristics of phylum molluscs
Have a soft, most, unsegmented body, have a muscular foot, has many shells.
What are 3 characteristics of the phylum echinoderms
Have a body based on a radiant pattern. Of five parts, has tube feet with suction pads for movement, body wall contains calcium carbonate plates with projecting spines
What are 3 characteristics of the phylum chordates?
Has a backbone, has a dorsal nerve cord with the anterior end usually enlarged forming the brain, most have an internal skeleton of bone and cartilage
What classes are under arthropods?
Crustaceans, arachnids, insects, myriapods.
What classes are under chordates?
Pisces(fish), amphibians, reptiles, aves(birds), mammals.
What are 3 characteristics of the class crustaceans?
Had two pairs of antennae, has five or seven pairs of legs, body is divided into head thorax and abdomen or cephalothorax and abdomen.
What are 3 characteristics of arachnids?
Have no antennnae, have four pairs of legs and body is divided into cephalothorax and abdomen.
What are characteristics of insects?
One pair of antennae, has three pairs of legs, body divided into head, thorax and abdomen, have a pair of compound eyes, most have two pairs of wings.
What are 3 characteristics of myriapods?
One pair of antennae, many pairs of legs and body is elongated and divided into many segments.
centipedes, millipedes.
