Photosynthesis Flashcards
Photosynthesis
The way in which plants make glucose using light energy
Photosynthesis word equation
Carbon
Dioxide+Water โ Glucose + Oxygen
Balanced chemical equation
6CO2 + 6H20 โ C6H12O6+602
What is needed for Photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide, light energy, chlorophyll, water
What is produced during Photosynthesis
Glucose+waste oxygen
Energy conversion that occurs during Photosynthesis
Light โ Chemical
Is Photosynthesis catabolic or anabolic?
Anabolic
Events of light stage
Light is absorbed, energised, high energy electrons, move with an electron accepter molecule ๐. 2 pathways given
Light stage path 1
Some electrons return to the chlorophyll. Lose energy. Energy released is trapped by ADP and a phosphate used to form ATP and water (cyclic photophosphorylation)
Light stage pathway 2
Electrons donโt return. Pass through 2 at a time through another set electron accepter molecules ๐. Energy loss again makes ATP. The electrons pass through NADP+ (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide) forming NADP-
Light absorbed splits water into oxygen, electrons and H+ ions (protons). H ions mix with NADP- forming NADPH
Light stage products
ATP, NADPH, Oxygen
Dark stage events
Co2 released from air enters chloroplast, reduced (H added) to become glucose. NADPH made in the light stage remakes the NADP+
When ATP releases 3rd phosphate, ADP is reformed
