Q

where is the upper epidermis?
(think: upper -at the top epidermis - dermis means SKIN)

A

it is at the top - it is transparent so light can pass through to the palisade layer where photosynthesis happens

Q

what does the stomata do? what is it?

A
  • tiny holes in the leaf
  • allows carbon dioxide in for photosynthesis
  • lets water out for transpiration

Q

what does a guard cell do?

A

opens and closes the stomata

Gas Exchange: Stomata allow gases (such as carbon dioxide and oxygen) to enter and exit the leaf. Guard cells control the opening and closing of stomatal pores. When water moves into the guard cells (via osmosis), they become turgid, causing the stomata to open. This allows gases to diffuse in and out of the leaf. Conversely, when guard cells lose water and become flaccid, stomata close, preventing further gas exchange
Water Regulation: By adjusting stomatal opening, guard cells regulate water loss through transpiration. When the guard cells lose water, stomata close, minimizing water vapor escape from the leaf. This mechanism helps conserve water during dry conditions - bing ai

Q

Explain why light intensity is a limiting factor.

A

light is needed for photosynthesis as it is the light energy converted into chemical energy
- eventually though adding more light won’t increase the rate of photosynthesis

Q

Explain why temperature is a limiting factor.

A
  • it impacts the enzymes involved
  • TOO HOT - denature
  • TOO COLD - the enzymes are too slow
    —> optimum temp.

Q

Explain why carbon dioxide concentration is a limiting factor.

A
  • it is a reactant in photosynthesis
  • not much of the air is CO2 so it is can be short supply
  • the graph increases but then plateaus - there is a limit to how much a plant needs
