Photosynthesis Flashcards
Photosynthesis
This is the process where energy from light is used to make glucose from H2O and CO2
Photosynthesis
Is the process where energy from light is used to make glucose from H20 and CO2
Photosynthesis Equation
6co2+6H2O+Energy - C6H1206+6O2
Metabolic pathway
A series of small reactions controlled by enzymes eg respiration and photosynthesis
Phosphorylation
Adding phosphate to a molecule eg ADP phosphorlated to ATP
Chloroplasts
Small, Flattened organelles found in plant cells. Location photosynthesis double membrane called chloroplast envelope
Thylakoids
Stacked up in the chloroplast into structures called the grana are linked together by bits off thylakoid membrane called lamellae.
Photosynthetic pigments
chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b
These are coloured substances that absorb the light energy needed for photosynthesis the pigments are found in the thylakoid and are attached to proteins this is called a photosystem
Photosystem; Primary pigments
These are reaction centres where electrons are excited during the light dependant reaction
Accessory pigments
Make up light harvesting systems. These surround reaction centres and transfer light energy to them to boost the energy available for electron excitement
Light dependant reaction
- Requires light energy
- Takes place in the thylakoid membranes of the chloroplasts
- Light energy is used to add a phosphate group to ADP to create ATP and to reduce NADP H20 oxidised to O2
Light independent reaction
- Known as Calvin cycle doesn’t use light energy directly
- Takes place in stroma of chloroplasts
- Here ATP and reduced NADP supply the energy and hydrogen to make glucose from C02
High light intensity of a certain wavelength
Light is needed to provide energy for the light dependant reaction the higher conc of light the higher energy
Why is 25 degrees optimum
This is the perfect temp for maximum enzyme activity its important as enzymes catalyse the reactions in the krebs cycle
