Photons and ATP Generation Flashcards
What type of light detecting molecule do Archaea have?
Baceriodhopsin
How does bacteriodhopsin work?
Light is detected by the bacteriodhopsin. This energy absorbed is used to pump protons through the bacteriodhopsin, which generates a proton gradient. The protons diffuse back through the membrane through the ATP synthase, which generates ATP from ADP and Pi.
How is ATP produced in plants?
The energy from the photons is absorbed by the photosynthetic pigments in the chloroplast. The absorbed energy drives a flow of electrons along an electron transport chain and this electron flow is used to pump protons across the thylakoid membrane into the stroma. Hydrogen ions diffuse back through the membrane through ATP synthase to generate ATP.
