Cytoskeleton Flashcards
What are actin microfilaments?
Polymers of the soluble globular protein actin. They consist of 2 strands of monomers wrapped around one another and have a thickness of only 2mm.
how are intermediate filaments formed?
They are formed from fibrous proteins They have a rope-like structure, 10mm in diameter, consist of 2 monomers, and have tremendous mechanical strength.
What are microtubules?
They are hollow straight rods. They are polymers of a dimer made from the soluble globular proteins, a tubulin and b tubulin. These dimers are arranged to form microtubules with diameter of 25mm.
What is the purpose of the cytoskeleton?
Mechanical support and shape to the cell, movement of cellular components.
