Parental investment Flashcards
What is parental investment?
The use of resources by a parent to benefit future or existing offspring.
Costs and benefits of parental investment?
It is costly to the parent. Benefits are that it can result in increased number of offspring and increased chances of survival.
What are sessile organisms?
Those organisms which are fixed in one place.
R selected species?
R selected species tend to be small species that produce many offspring, each of which has a low change of survival
K selected species?
K selected species tend to be longer lived, and are more likely to be subject to strong intra- specific competition for resources in stable environments. These species show large parental investment in a much smaller number of offspring.
