Phobias can be treated using Behavioral Therapies Flashcards
behavioral treatments for phobias are based on
classical conditioning
how many techniques are there for getting rid of phobias?
two
what are the two techniques?
systematic desensitization
flooding
- systematic desensitization works by
using counter-conditioning so that the person learns to associate the phobic stimulus with relaxation than fear
- the client creates a
fear hierarchy - easy stuff at the bottom (looking at a picture) all the way up to facing the phobia
- the client is then taught
relaxation techniques
- the client works up the hierarchy,
using the breathing techniques to stay relaxed
it usually takes
6-8 sessions before the client no longer fears the stimulus
flooding is where someone
faces their phobic stimulus head on
the person stays with their phobic stimulus
until the anxiety dies down and they realize that there is nothing to fear
strengths: behavioral therapy is
very effective for treating specific phobias
strengths: Zinbard et al date
1992
strengths: Zinbarg et al found that systematic desensitization was
the most effective way to treat phobias
weaknesses: ethical issues - flooding
flooding causes patients a lot of anxiety
weaknesses: if something bad happens during flooding
it will reinforce the phobia
