Deviation from Statistical Norms Flashcards
abnormality can also be seen as
statistically rare behavior
statistically rare behavior can be expressed in terms of
normal distribution
bell curve graph: people who behave in the average way
make up the middle of the bell curve
bell curve graph: people who behave abnormally
make up the tail ends of the bell curve
bell curve graph: the axis shows
a numerical measure of the behavior
there are problems with defining abnormality simply in terms of
statistical infrequency
it doesn’t take into account
desirable behavior
an example of unusual desirable behavior is having
a high IQ
there’s no distinction between
rare, slightly odd behavior and rare, psychologically abnormal behavior
there is no definite cut off point where
normal behavior becomes abnormal
some behaviors that are considered psychologically abnormal are quite common such as
mild depression
Hassett and White date
1989
Hassett and White argue that you cannot use statistical infrequency to define abnormality because
using the statistical infrequency idea, some disorders would not be classed as anything unusual
