what is a phobia
A
an exaggerated fear of an object or situation. affect as many as 11% of the population at some time in their lives

diagnosing a phobia
A
- marked fear or anxiety about a specific situation or object
- the phobic object or situation is actively avoided or endured with intense fear or anxiety
- the disturbance is not better explained by the symptoms of another mental disorder

only explains the acquisition of phobias (we develop them through association)

explain the maintenance of phobias. we avoid the phobic object/situation to prevent being anxious or fearful

explains both the acquisition and maintenance of phobias. we learn them though observing and imitating role models and we maintain them through vicarious reinforcement
