flooding Flashcards
flooding
there is no gradual exposure like in SD, clients are exposed to the stimulus at the top of their hierarchy right from the start
rationale behind flooding is two-fold
- the patients anxiety, if maintained at a high level, will eventually lead to exhaustion and they no longer have the effort to react to the stimulus
- is the patient cannot make their usual escape extinction will occur (they will realise that they’re faced with their phobia and that they’re not harmed)
exposure
involved gives, prolonged exposure for multiple hours in a row. the clients decide the level of anxiety they think they can endure. therapists offer reminders of relaxation techniques
relaxation
the therapist offers little assistance outside of the reminder to do relaxation techniques
rapid exposure
the person becomes too physically exhausted for the CR to occur
no escape
if you’re prevented from having your usual escape route extinction should occur
implosion
phobic patients are bombarded with detailed descriptions of their phobia for 6-9 continuous hours (in vitro method)
extinction
the CS no longer produced the CR, fear is replaced with relaxation
virtual reality
creating a virtual environment for/of the phobia that causes extreme anxiety (exposure therapy)
free association
freely talking and stuff may start to link between past and present (makes more sense)
dream analysis
the idea that dreams should uncover where phobias stem from
