bandura 1965 Flashcards
three IV’s
the condition the children were exposed to, the sex of the child and the incentive given to the child
sample
- 33 boys and 33 girls
- aged from 42-71 months (with a mean age of 51 months)
- recruited from stanford university nursery
group 1
saw an aggressive model be rewarded with sweets and soft drinks
group 2
saw an aggressive model be punched (by another agent shaking his finger and making reprimanding remarks)
group 3
saw an aggressive model
who was neither rewarded or punished
control group?
there was no control group that was not exposed to the modelled violence
second phase
children were taken to another room and told that for each physical or verbal imitative behaviour they reproduced they would be given a drink of juice or a sticker. if they simply described the behaviour they were encouraged to demonstrate it
results
- children imitated the aggression that they saw
- boys exhibited more overall aggression than girls
- when children were offered a reward for imitating the models aggressive behaviour all of them tended to imitate it by acting aggressively
- girls were almost as aggressive as boys if offered a
reward for their behaviour - those who watched the model be reinforced or have no consequences shows more aggressive behaviour than those who waged the aggressive behaviour be punished
- quant data: mean number of different imitative responses produced by boys with no incentive = 2.5 and for the same with an incentive it was 4
conclusion
this study concluded that children could learn by imitation, that they’re more likely to imitate a model when they seen them be rewarded for their behaviour and that children can learn from watching models in a film
