Complications in phlebotomy
CLUE: “VICAND”
Vascular complications (most common)
Infectious complications
Cardiovascular
Anemia
Neurological
Dermatological
Fibrous capsule around encapsulated blood caused by a break in the blood vessel
pseudoaneurysm
The patient has coagulation disorder. Its vein produces edema and swelling.
Thrombosis
Leakage of large amount of blood around puncture site that causes swelling.
Hematoma
Leakage of small amount of blood in the tissue around the puncture site but do not cause swelling.
Bruising (ecchymosis)
Results in a shift of body water from inside the blood vessel to the interstitial spaces
Posture from supine (lying) to sitting position
a. higher in the morning and lower in the afternoon
b. lower in the morning and higher in the afternoon
a. Cortisol, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and iron
b. eosinophil
These constituents increases during exercise
CLUE: “Come to Me, Those Who Are Carrying Heavy.”

Myoglobin
Total protein
WBC count
Aspartate aminotransferase
Creatinine kinase
HDL-chlesterol
It can cause a temporary increase in WBC count in children
Anxiety and excessive crying
These will temporarily increase after less than 2 hours of eating
Glucose and lipid content
Chronic smoking can lead to increase:
Hb concentration
RBC count
MCV
WBC count
Hematocrit
Neutrophil
Occurs when a needle sticks an artery; prevents blood from moving
Reflex arteriospasm
Abnormal connection between vein and artery after repeated venipuncture
Arteriovenous fistula
