Phases Of Flight: Ground Flashcards

Q

Who initiates the CHAAF checks? What follows?

A

The copilot. The captain confirms.

This essentially ends the preflight setup, so the captain then calls for the preflight checklist.

We are then cleared to begin start process.

Q

What are the initial actions upon entering the cockpit for the captain and the copilot?

A

The captain obtains the ATIS and the copilot obtains the departure clearance.

The captain monitors the clearance and the copilot then begins the preflight memory checks.

While the copilot is doing this, the captain then enters the relevant data into the FMC.

WHEN the copilot reaches the Oxygen checks, the captain then starts the same checks on his side.

Finish with checking the seats, pedals and belts are in place.

Q

When ready for start, what are the events concerning both pilots leading up to and including the prestart checks?

A

First of all, the captain ensures all doors are closed and calls:
“Flight deck to ground, remove GROUND POWER and ready for your checks please”
I think they will confirm it is clear, then the captain will report:
“Standby for start”

While this is happening, the FO will call ATC or DISPATCH and request start and pushback clearance. The captain assists in monitoring this.

When cleared, the copilot does his FEAT checks.
The captain meanwhile checks Stabliser trim and Rudder trim. (Feet SoRe?)

Finishing this, captain calls for prestart checklist. Copilot calls captain checks.

Q

What are the prestart procedures after the before start checks, and up to both engines started?

A

We must ensure that ground is clear. Captain therefore asks: “fly deck to ground, am I clear to start number 2?”

When clear, state: “start engine number two”
This prompts FO to turn the eng 2 start switch to GROUND (because we’re on the ground).

The engines then spool, and at 25% n2, CPT sets START levers (NOT the thrust levers) to IDLE.

The FO then reports “starter cut out”

Repeat for engine number 2 and then cpt tells the ground crew:

Cleared to disconnect the headset, see you on the left (or right).

Q

After start and once ground crew has disconnected, what is the captains call and what is the response?
What are the FOs memory items, up to the before taxi checklist?

A

When sure ground crew are clear, captain States flaps 5, and sets them to 5. This is the FOs que to begin his after start/ before taxi checks.

These are:
Generators to ON
Pitot ht to ON
Engine anti ice to ON (<10deg moist)
Packs AUTO
APU bleed OFF
APU OFF
Engine start switches to COMTINUOUS

Both cpt and FO verify that:
Ground equipment is CLEAR
Recall is CHECKED
Flight controls are CHECKED (Cpt does this, FO follows through)

The captain then calls for the before taxi checklist and completes it.

Q

What are the checks in taxi up to the hold point?

A

The FO begins by calling for taxi. The clearance is monitored by Capt and when cleared, the Capt turns on the taxi light and checks clear left. The FO checks clear right.

When clear traffic, taxi Max 20kts, 10 in turns.

In one turn only, FO check the instruments. Then he does his PEDS checks, ensuring the aircraft is set up for the flight nav wise.

CABIN CREW REPORT SECURE FOR T/O

Both ensure shoulder straps secured, and then CPT requests the before takeoff checklist.

A

For the Capt:
